A word from Brian Sussman:
Last week, at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., President Barack Obama was seated before authentic greatness and seethed. The President’s cornerstone legislation, Obamacare, and his lust for a more progressive tax code, were being eloquently dissected by one of the world’s finest surgeons, Dr. Benjamin Carson, who was presenting the keynote address.
Dr. Carson is a made-in-America success story. Raised in the ghetto of Detroit by a single mother with a third grade education, young Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades and was in constant trouble. But Sonya Carson refused to give up on her son, convincing him he could make something of his life. She demanded he check books out from the library, read them and submit reports on what he had learned to her. Unbeknownst to Ben, his mother was illiterate and unable to read the reports he created. Sonya also taught her son to trust in God. In time Ben became a devout follower of Jesus Christ.
By the time he attended high school his life had turned around. His body of knowledge flourished. His grades were stellar. He graduated at the top of his class and received a scholarship to Yale. From there he attended the University of Michigan Medical School. At age 33, he was named the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical procedure that Carson helped initiate. Carson also pioneered a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removes one half of their brain.
So there stood Dr. Carson before the nation, with the President and the First Lady on the dais immediately to his right, talking about his faith in Jesus Christ and the state of our nation. He repeatedly criticized Obamacare and government intrusion in healthcare. He also spoke negatively of Obama’s desire to punish higher wage earners with increased taxes. Carson said the tax code should be simplified. “What we need to do is come up with something simple,” he said. “And when I pick up my Bible, you know what I see? I see the fairest individual in the universe, God, and he’s given us a system. It’s called a tithe. We don’t necessarily have to do 10% but it’s the principle. He [God] didn’t say if your crops fail, don’t give me any tithe or if you have a bumper crop, give me triple tithe. So there must be something inherently fair about proportionality. You make $10 billion, you put in a billion. You make $10 you put in one.”
Regarding health care, Dr. Carson proposed lifetime health savings accounts. “Here’s my solution: When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record, and a health savings account to which money can be contributed — pretax — from the time you’re born ’til the time you die. When you die, you can pass it on to your family members, so that when you’re 85 years old and you got six diseases, you’re not trying to spend up everything. You’re happy to pass it on and there’s nobody talking about death panels.”
Benjamin Carson is a man who refuses to be defined by his race, occupation, or success, and he refuses to cave to political correctness.
I encourage you to watch Dr. Carson’s Prayer Breakfast address for yourself.
Even though he was present, it’s a shame our President wasn’t listening to this wonderful Christian and patriot. he could have learned a few things.
Here’s a link to the speech. Please pass it on.
