The Playground Spinner: Nowhere near dangerous as the Smartphone

You would never see one of these playground spinners in a park today.

Why? Because they are deemed far too dangerous.

Sure, many of us Boomers (born 1946-1964) and Gen X’rs (1965-1980) recall at least one person who got skinned up or perhaps even broke an arm while playing on a spinner, but think of what we gained from the dizzying ride? The spinner required cooperation to get going; the more kids pushing it the faster it spun. There was wild screaming, laughter, and an occasional easily settled argument. The physical sensation while on the ride was an education in centrifugal force allowing for varying levels of measured risk-taking as well as improving motor skills.

And for the kids with the skinned elbows or broken arms there were bragging rights.

I would argue the spinner was the best piece of playground equipment ever invented.

But in the 1990s it was gradually replaced by “safe playground equipment” designed by helicopter parents who wanted to bubble wrap their children.

Now it’s become far worse. Kids play in the pasteurized park up until the time they are given an electronic phone-based portal steering them into a virtual world that is more injurious than a playground spinner. As they spend increasing amounts of time on their devices their social interaction and motor skills are underdeveloped, they become physically out of shape and they are fed a woke diet of progressivism. Tragically, many find themselves wandering into the dark side of the Internet (porn, sexploitation, etc.). That immense corner of cyberspace is far more obsessive than your old man’s pile of Playboy magazines.
I’m thankful I raised my kids in the 80s and 90s because, as Huxley predicted, it’s become a brave new world.
